As a popular alternative to traditional braces, Invisalign is capable of fixing a misaligned bite and giving you a straighter, better-aligned smile. Crossbites, overbites, underbites, and other bite problems can result in oral health issues like cracked or chipped teeth and TMJ disorders. Luckily, your dentist can help you realign your jaw and achieve a more uniform bite with clear aligners. Read on to learn about four common bite problems in Sparta that Invisalign can fix.

Crossbite

When some of your bottom teeth are sitting in front of your top ones, this is called a crossbite. Invisalign can fix slight crossbites, like those that only involve one or two teeth. Severe bite problems, on the other hand, may need to be better treated with traditional metal braces. There are two main types of crossbites:

  • Anterior Crossbite: when the lower front teeth fit over the ones of your top jaw
  • Posterior Crossbite: when the lower back teeth fit over the ones in your top jaw

Underbite

An underbite occurs when your bottom teeth sit in front of the upper ones when your mouth is closed. This usually occurs when the lower jaw grows faster than the upper one. Having an underbite can make it difficult to eat and speak properly. This can also subject the teeth to extra wear. Paired with attachments like elastics, Invisalign can make the bottom teeth fit behind the top ones by pulling the lower jaw backward. For underbites in older patients or those with more severe bite issues, traditional orthodontics may be needed.

Overbite

Overbites occur when the upper teeth stick out too far. It’s normal to have a slight overbite, but having a larger one makes the top teeth more likely to become worn or injured. For patients ages 12 and under, Invisalign can be used with a mandibular advancement appliance to move the jaw into the right place as it continues to grow. For those over 12, clear aligners can usually be used with elastics to gradually move the jaw into the correct position.

Open Bite

When your top and bottom teeth don’t touch when your mouth is closed, this means you have an open bite. Open bites are uncommon, and they can be caused by the jawbone growing at an irregular rate and childhood habits. Fortunately, Invisalign can be used to move the teeth and help them meet correctly.

If you have bite problems that need to be addressed, make an appointment with your dentist so you can discuss if Invisalign would be right for you. They can help you determine the best way to achieve the happy, healthy smile of your dreams!
