Why are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

All too often, patients assume that they don’t need to visit their dentist if they aren’t experiencing abnormal symptoms, like bleeding gums or pain when biting down. The truth is that many common dental problems, including cavities, can develop and progress under the radar. Plus, plaque and tartar can quickly accumulate without routine cleanings. To put it simply, routine checkups and cleanings play a crucial role in both detecting and preventing oral health problems, so it’s important that you make them a priority.

What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

During your dental checkup, you’ll meet with one of our dedicated, experienced, and caring dentists, Dr. Zelia Cannon or Dr. James Shahinian. After asking you a few questions and reviewing your latest X-rays, they will complete a visual exam. In the process, they will look for warning signs of tooth decay, gum disease, oral cancer, and the like. If they see anything unusual, they will bring it to your attention. Otherwise, they will answer any questions you have and see you at your next visit!

During your dental cleaning, your dental hygienist will gently remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. In the process, they will share any recommendations they have for you – from a certain type of floss they recommend to an area of your mouth that needs more attention during your oral hygiene regimen. They will also floss and polish your teeth, ensuring you leave our office with a smile that looks and feels incredible.
