Veneer Fell Off? Here’s What to Do

As one of the most sought-after cosmetic dentistry treatments, veneers are customizable, extremely lifelike, highly durable, and can last 20 or more years. As strong as they are, it’s still possible for them to fall off. If one of your veneers happens to come off, here’s what you should do until your cosmetic dentist in Sparta can fix or replace it.

Keep Calm

Whether you’re at home or out on the town with friends, losing a veneer may send you into a panic. It’s important to stay calm and attempt to locate the veneer. If you find it, place it into a plastic bag for safekeeping. If you can’t find it, your dentist will be able to provide you with a replacement.

Call Your Dentist

Once the veneer is stored somewhere safe, call your dentist’s office and explain what happened so they can walk you through the next steps. They’ll have you make an appointment to fix the veneer and so they can determine what caused it to fall off in the first place. Even if the incident occurs before or after business hours, their office voicemail might offer instructions on what to do in the meantime.

Don’t Glue the Veneer Back on Yourself

You may be tempted to reattach the veneer to your tooth yourself, but this isn’t a good idea. This is likely to damage your veneer, and using items that don’t have ADA-approved ingredients can be bad for your health. Be patient and wait until you can get into the dentist’s office to receive the proper treatment.

Be Cautious

Whether you have a few hours until your dental appointment or several days, be extra careful when you eat or drink anything. You’re likely to experience some sensitivity, so limit or avoid hot and cold foods and beverages until the tooth is repaired. Chew on the opposite side of your mouth from where the veneer fell off to limit discomfort and minimize your risk of damaging your now vulnerable tooth.

Use a Temporary Solution

If enamel roughness or increased sensitivity is giving you a hard time, try using dental wax as a temporary solution. Apply a thin layer flat against the surface to create a barrier between the tooth and anything that’s been irritating it. You can also take over-the-counter pain relievers if tooth sensitivity is severe. Be sure to practice good oral hygiene and drink lots of water to protect the tooth from decay.

Having a veneer come off can be a bit stressful, but it’s easy enough to fix. Until your cosmetic dentist in Sparta can see you and repair the tooth, follow the above tips so you can protect it from harm and have a beautiful, complete smile again in no time!
