Champagne for New Year’s

There is no better time than now to get started with new steps to better your life. Whether you are looking to get more exercise, sleep a full 8 hours each night, or read more books instead of watching TV, you are taking a stand to improve your overall wellbeing. If you haven’t decided on a New Year’s resolution yet, or you have room for a few more, you’re in luck! Here are some resolution ideas for improving your oral health.

Schedule a Dental Checkup

While regular cleanings and checkups are essential for you to maintain excellent dental health, approximately a third of Americans don’t see a dentist as often as they should. Now would be a great time to give your dentist a call to book an appointment. Before you leave the practice, be sure to schedule your next visit. This way, you will be back on track with your regular visits.

Floss Each Day

Brushing is an effective way for you to remove food particles from your teeth, but there are some places that your toothbrush can’t reach. That’s why flossing is necessary in order to remove bacteria and plaque from between the teeth and beneath the gumline. If you aren’t already in the habit of flossing every day, now is a good time to get started. Place a container of floss next to your toothbrush and toothpaste. This way, you will see it every time you brush your teeth.

Limit Sugar Consumption

An occasional sugary treat doesn’t generally do too much damage, but if you are constantly eating them throughout the day, this can make it more likely that you develop dental issues and other health problems throughout your body. The best way to cut back on sugar is to reduce the number of sweet treats that you buy. Try to find something else that satisfies the craving. For example, switch out your afternoon bottle of soda for sparkling water.

Have Healthy Snacks

Not all of your favorite snacks are harmful for your smile. Be sure that you’re including plenty of tooth healthy foods in your diet. Dairy products are excellent for your teeth because they are high in calcium. Try adding some yogurt or a glass of milk to your breakfast. Cheese makes a great snack, so you could create a cheese board next time you’re looking for an appetizer. Fibrous foods and veggies, like apples, pears, carrots, and celery, help to stimulate saliva flow and keep your teeth clean. Instead of potato chips or crackers, have some nutrient-rich nuts.

Stop Smoking

Using tobacco products doubles your risk for gum disease. It is also linked to many other health issues, including oral cancer. Because this habit is so difficult to give up, it’s important that you find a healthier replacement activity for when cravings kick in. Talk to your physician, family, and friends about the best way for you to give up the smokes for good!

Don’t leave your smile behind in 2022. By implementing the resolution ideas listed above, you can work towards a healthier, happier smile!
