Clear Aligners Turning Yellow? Here’s What You Can Do About It

One of the biggest perks of clear aligners is right there in the name: they’re clear! Unlike traditional metal braces, aligners can straighten your teeth without making your orthodontic treatment the first thing people notice.

But what happens when those once-invisible trays start looking yellow, cloudy, or generally less than fresh? Discoloration is often a sign that your aligners need a little more attention. Fortunately, a few simple habits can help keep them looking and feeling cleaner throughout your treatment.

Why Do Clear Aligners Turn Yellow?

There are several reasons your aligners may begin to change color. Dark-colored foods and drinks, including coffee, tea, berries, and certain sauces, can stain the material. Even if you remember to remove your aligners before eating, residue left on your teeth can eventually transfer to your trays.

Your mouth can also contribute to discoloration. Saliva, plaque, bacteria, and tiny food particles can become trapped between your teeth and aligners. Over time, this buildup can cause your trays to look yellow or cloudy and may contribute to unpleasant odors.

Don’t Drink Anything but Water While Wearing Them

One of the easiest ways to protect your clear aligners is to remove them before eating or drinking anything besides water. Coffee, tea, soda, wine, and other strongly colored beverages can stain the trays.

If you do enjoy a staining food or drink, remove your aligners first. Afterward, rinse your mouth with water and clean your teeth before putting your trays back in whenever possible.

Rinse Your Aligners Regularly

Every time you remove your aligners, give them a rinse with cool or lukewarm water. This can help prevent saliva and plaque from drying onto the trays and becoming more difficult to remove.

Don’t use hot water, since excessive heat can damage or distort the plastic. Keeping your aligners in their case when you aren’t wearing them can also help prevent them from picking up additional debris.

Clean Your Aligners Gently

Your aligners need regular cleaning, but more aggressive isn’t necessarily better. Follow your dentist’s instructions for cleaning your specific trays, and use a soft toothbrush or an aligner-cleaning method recommended by your dental professional.

Avoid using abrasive products that could scratch the plastic. Scratches can make aligners look cloudy and may create additional places for buildup to collect.

Keep Your Teeth Clean, Too

Clean aligners can only do so much if they’re being placed over teeth covered in plaque. Brush your teeth regularly and clean between them every day. Keeping your mouth clean helps reduce the amount of bacteria, food debris, and plaque that can transfer to your aligners.

If your trays remain yellow or develop a persistent odor despite proper cleaning, mention it to your dentist. They can help determine whether the discoloration is simply staining or whether your cleaning routine needs to be adjusted.

Clear aligners work best when you take care of both the trays and the smile underneath them.
