Your Guide to Eating and Drinking after All-on-4 Surgery

Dental implants can enable you to eat virtually anything you want. In fact, with All-on-4 dentures, you should have a strong bite force that can stand up to even relatively tough and chewy foods. Before you get to that point, though, you will need to undergo surgery and make your way through a recovery process. What can you eat and drink as you are healing from the All-on-4 procedure? This guide provides some practical tips.

Start Out with a Liquid Diet

Immediately following your All-on-4 surgery, your mouth will be sensitive and your gums might be swollen. During this initial recovery phase, which may last 1 – 2 weeks, you should adhere to a liquid diet. This will minimize the risk of irritating your surgical sites and will allow your body to begin the healing process.

Consider including the following in your liquid diet:

  • Broths and soups
  • Smoothies and milkshakes (without hard add-ins)
  • Protein drinks and meal replacement shakes
  • Fruit juices and vegetable juices
  • Water and herbal teas

Make sure to avoid any liquids that are too hot or too cold, as extreme temperatures can cause discomfort. You should also be mindful of not overindulging in sugary drinks, as they can contribute to plaque buildup around your implants.

Progress to Soft Foods

As the initial swelling and sensitivity begin to subside, you can start introducing soft foods into your diet. Soft foods will provide you with the necessary nutrients while still being gentle on your healing gums.

Some suitable soft foods include:

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Yogurt
  • Applesauce
  • Cottage cheese
  • Soft-cooked vegetables
  • Oatmeal
  • Well-cooked pasta
  • Meatloaf

While making this transition, make sure to chew with care and avoid using your front teeth to bite directly into large chunks of food. Instead, use the sides of your mouth to minimize pressure on the implants. If any food causes significant discomfort, you may need to wait a while before attempting to eat it again.

Resuming Your Normal Eating Habits

Once your mouth has sufficiently healed and your dentist has replaced your temporary denture with a permanent one, you can begin to reintroduce firmer foods back into your diet. This usually happens a few months after surgery.

Here are some important tips to keep in mind:

  • Consider starting with foods that are easy to chew and gradually work your way up to harder foods.
  • Cut food into small, manageable pieces.
  • Be very careful with sticky or overly hard foods (such as caramel or nuts). In fact, you might choose to avoid such items altogether.
  • Chew slowly and carefully.
  • Maintain a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, proteins, and grains.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Remember, every individual heals at their own pace, and it is essential to follow the guidance of your dental team throughout this journey. By adhering to these dietary guidelines, you can set yourself up for long-term success with your All-on-4 dental implants.
