Gum disease is one of the most common oral health problems in the world, and it can lead to permanent damage such as gum recession, jawbone erosion, and tooth loss and possibly dangerous secondary infections like sepsis if it is not addressed. While the advanced stage of periodontitis must be managed with regular treatment at your dentist’s office, the early stage of gingivitis can often be reversed by improving your oral care habits. Here’s how long it may take for your gums to heal after gingivitis.

What Is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is defined as inflammation of the gum tissue, and it is typically caused by irritation and infection resulting from harmful oral bacteria feeding on food debris and sugary residues lingering in the mouth. Gingivitis usually shows itself through symptoms in the gums such as:

  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Redness
  • Bleeding
  • Bad breath

How Can I Prevent or Reverse Gingivitis?

Luckily, gingivitis can usually be reversed with proper oral hygiene habits if you catch it in time, and you can keep this infection away by continuing to clean your teeth adequately when your gums are healthy. Excellent oral hygiene habits include:

  • Brushing: Clean your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day, once in the morning and once at night.
  • Flossing: Gently clean between your teeth with dental floss at least once a day.
  • Regular dental visits: Seeing your dentist twice a year will allow them to give your mouth a thorough cleaning and address issues in their early stages.
  • Smart dietary decisions: Limiting your consumption of sugar, starch, and acid can deprive harmful oral bacteria of the fuel they need to thrive and protect your teeth and gums from irritation.

How Long Will It Take to Reverse Gingivitis?

After you adopt better oral hygiene habits, it should take about two weeks to reverse your gingivitis and prevent the far more serious infection called periodontitis. Afterward, you’ll still need to maintain an excellent dental care regimen to regularly eliminate nasty oral bacteria and keep your gums stimulated so they can more effectively fight new infections.

Don’t let gingivitis lead to more horrible oral health issues. Addressing gum disease promptly can allow you to avoid permanent damage and keep your smile happy and strong.
