Veneers can take your plain old smile and transform it into the perfect teeth of your dreams within as little as two appointments. They’re incredibly powerful, and to keep them in top shape, you have to take care of them.

If you’re getting veneers soon, there are a few adjustments you can make to your diet that can make your veneers last much longer. Here’s a good diet to adopt to keep them shining.

Diet for Temporary Veneers

While your veneers are still being made, you’re probably going to need to wear a set of acrylic temporary veneers. These are adhered to your teeth with a much weaker cement than your permanent veneers will be, which means that they require a little bit of care to keep them on your teeth.

Most dentists recommend starting a soft food diet for the week or two that you wear your temporary veneers. This entails cutting out any hard, crunchy foods that could cause your temporary veneers to come loose.

When wearing your temporary veneers, you should try and stick to soft foods that won’t stain your teeth. This doesn’t have to be restricted to applesauce or mashed potatoes; you can just as easily get by on pasta, soft fruits, and tender meats like chicken and fish.

Diet for Permanent Veneers

Your permanent veneers will be adhered with a much more powerful adhesive than your temporaries, and made of a much more durable material. As a result, you’ll have to do much less work to keep them in good condition. That said, there are certain foods worth avoiding if you want to protect your veneers.

Porcelain is stain-resistant, which means that it’ll collect stains much more slowly than your enamel. However, this can be a double-edged sword; if you drink a lot of staining drinks it’ll become obvious which of your teeth are veneers because they’ll be noticeably whiter than the rest of them.

You should also avoid anything hard enough to crack the porcelain on your veneers. In the same vein, it’s important not to use your veneers as tools to open things.

Keep these tips in mind, and you should be able to keep your new smile strong and shining for a long time to come!
